Finland
In 1808-1809 Sweden lost Finland to Russia. In 1917, Finland became independent from Russia.
In Eastern Finland, fixed family surnames that often ended in "nen" were used.

Society of Finland HisKi Project. This site has transcribed
and indexed church records.

Institute of Migration Siirtolaisuusinstituutti. The
emigrant register serves genealogists in Finland and abroad. The
information can also be used for scientific research. The main
databases are the passport records of the provinces and
magistrates and the passenger lists of the Finland Steamship
Company, the references to books and newspapers and the data on
Finns deceased abroad from the Foreign ministry.

Muisiti: Project for Digitization and Network Delivery of the
Finnish National Collection. The Muisti-project was a joint
project within the
Ministry of Education´s programme "Finland as Information
Society" with the following participants

Audiovisual Centre of the University of Helsinki,
Computer Centre of the
University of Helsinki,
Finnish Literature Society,
National Archives of Finland and
National Board of
Antiquities in co-operation with
Åbo Akademi University
Library and Turku
University Library. The project was set up 1.5.1996 and
completed its work 30.4.1998. The aim of the Muisti project was
to see how existing collections could be digitized and
networked. The project produced the reference database Muisti
and local image databases containing digitized texts, pictures,
manuscripts and maps.

Library of Finland Digital Collections. Vast numbers of
newspapers, periodicals, small printed items and books contained
in the rich collections of the National Library of Finland have
now been digitized to form a fascinating material that throws
light on the past and present as parts of our national identity.

All newspapers published in Finland 1771-1890. Contains 165
titles and approximately 900,000 pages.
