  • CaliforniaAncestors.org - California Genealogical Society and Library. The California Genealogical Society, organized in San Francisco on February 12, 1898, is one of the premier genealogical resources in Northern California. The Library is rich in genealogy reference materials, both standard and unique, covering people and places in California and the rest of the country. The Society offers research services, online one-of-a-kind genealogical indexes and databases, and a research library housing over 38,000 reference materials from California, the United States, and around the world.

  • California, Birth Index, 1905-1995. Name index of birth index created by the California Department of Health Services, Vital Statistics Section in Sacramento. Index includes name, date of birth, sex, mother's surname, and county of birth. FamilySearch.

  • California, Births and Christenings, 1812-1988. Name index to birth, baptism and christening records from the state of California. Microfilm copies of these records are available at the Family History Library and Family History Centers. Due to privacy laws, recent records may not be displayed. The year range represents most of the records. A few records may be earlier or later. FamilySearch.

  • California, County Birth and Death Records, 1849-1994. Registers, records and certificates of county birth and death records acquired from county courthouses. This collection contains some delayed birth records, as well. Some city and town records are also included. This collection is being published as images become available. FamilySearch.

  • California, County Marriages, 1850-1952. Name index of marriage records including a number of different type of documents such as licenses, certificates, registers, applications, affidavits, stubs, etc. Currently this collection is 99% complete. Additional records will be added as they are completed. Not all indexed names will have a viewable record image due to contractual agreements. FamilySearch.

  • California, Death Index, 1905-1939. Death index located at the Office of the State Register, Sacramento, and the Butte County Courthouse, Oroville. The index is arranged alphabetically by the name of the deceased, initials of spouse, age, and date of death. Place of death or county of death is coded. FamilySearch.

  • California, Death Index, 1940-1997. Name index of death index created by the California Department of Health Services, Vital Statistics Section in Sacramento. Index includes name, sex, date and place of birth, date and county of death, father's last name, and mother's maiden name. FamilySearch.

  • California Digital Library. The California Digital Library supports the assembly and creative use of the world's scholarship and knowledge for the University of California libraries and the communities they serve.

  • California Digital Newspaper Collection, approx 1849-1911  A small but growing collection hosted by UC Riverside. Includes select  articles from Alta California, San Francisco Call, Amador Ledger, and the Los Angeles Herald, among others.

  • California, Divorce Index, 1966-1984. Index of divorces from the California Department of Health Services in Sacramento. Index provided by Ancestry.com. FamilySearch.
     
  • The California 1890 Great Register of Voters Index. North Salt Lake, Utah: Heritage Quest, 2001, 3 volumes. Compiled by volunteers of various California genealogical societies as part of a project for the California State Genealogical Alliance. Available in book format and on CD.

  • California Genealogical Society, 1700-1942. Genealogical collections located at the California Genealogical Society in Oakland. The collections consist of cemetery records including index of Phillips-tombstone transcription, ca.1700-1900; IOOF Cemetery, 1866-1932; Griffin Allied Family index, ca. 1900; probate register of actions (San Francisco City and County), 1906-1942; Alta and other newspaper people index, 1860-1861.   • California, Great Registers, 1866-1910. County Clerk voting registers from most counties in California. The registers were created every other year. Time period varies by county. Those records without a specific registration year, will have a "Registration Date Year Range." FamilySearch.

  • California, Marriages, 1850-1945. Name index to marriage records from the state of California.   • California, Northern U.S. District Court Naturalization Index, 1852-1989. This collection is a card index to naturalization records in the district and circuit courts of Northern California. Each court underwent jurisdictional and name changes over time. The circuit court(s) include: the Special Circuit Court, 1855-1863; the Tenth Circuit Court, 1863-1866; the Ninth Circuit Court for the District of California, 1866-1886; and the Circuit Court for the Northern District of California, 1886-1911. The District Courts included are: the Northern District of California, 1852-1916; the Southern Division of the Northern District, 1917-1966; the Northern District, 1966-1973; and the Northern Division of the Northern District, 1973-1989.   • California, Probate Estate Files,1833-1991. Estate files of the Probate and Superior Courts in the counties of Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Napa, Sacramento, San Benito, and Solano. The date ranges of the files will vary. FamilySearch.

  • California, San Diego Naturalization Index, 1868-1958. This is NARA publication M1526: Index to Naturalized Citizens from the Superior Court of San Diego, California, 1868-1958. These index cards include the the petitioner's name and file number, and often include residence and date of birth. Index courtesy of Fold3.com. FamilySearch.

  • California, San Francisco Area Funeral Home Records, 1835-1931. – Imaged Records -This project was indexed in partnership with the California Genealogical Society and Library. Name index and images of funeral home records from the Halsted N. Gray – Carew & English Mortuary Collection, located at the San Francisco Public Library. Images for all years in collection can be browsed, but name index currently covers only years 1896-1931. Collection includes a number of different funeral homes acquired over time by the Halsted N. Gray – Carew & English Mortuary company, most from the San Francisco area, but also including some from Burlingame, Stockton, and Sacramento. The collection includes funeral register books, burial registers, account books, case books, etc. Indexes appear at the beginning of some volumes. FamilySearch.

  • California, San Joaquin, County Public Library Obituary Index, 1850-1991. Images of index cards located at the San Joaquin County Public Library, Stockton, California. Contains clippings from various San Joaquin County and Stockton city newspapers of obituaries. FamilySearch.

  • California, San Mateo County Records, 1855-1991. – Browsable Images – County records including marriage intentions, naturalizations, deeds, patents, homesteads, and military service discharges. FamilySearch.

  • California, San Mateo County, Colma, Italian Cemetery Records, 1899-2011. Index cards and daily log book of the Italian Cemetery in Colma. This collection is being published as images become available. FamilySearch.

  • California, Southern District Court (Central) Naturalization Index, 1915-1976. Collection of approximately 273,000 naturalization index cards of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, Central Division (Los Angeles) in two alphabetic sequences. The first sequence represents naturalizations 1915-1930, the second naturalization from 1931 to 1976. The cards include the person's name, the petition number, date of petition, volume and page number of the petition. Some cards also include the declaration number, the date of declaration, volume and page number of the declaration, certification number, and date of issuance. This corresponds to NARA publication M1525: Naturalization Index Cards of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, Central Division (Los Angeles), 1915-1976. FamilySearch.

The rich visual heritage of northeastern California is documented in over 18.000 historical photographs, many dating from the 19th century and representing a wide variety of early photographic processes.

Corresponds to NARA Publication M1764: Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at San Pedro/Wilmington/Los Angeles, California, June 29, 1907 - June 30, 1948. FamilySearch.

  • Online Archive of California. The OAC brings together historical materials from a variety of California institutions, including museums, historical societies, and archives. Over 120,000 images; 50,000 pages of documents, letters, and oral histories; and 8,000 guides to collections are available.

  • San Francisco Call Database 1869-1895. For the 27 year period 1869-1891, the annual birth, marriage, and death records are merged and then broken into smaller files of about 35K each. This will allow a surname search using only one file. Subsequent years are broken into similarly sized files. The smaller file sizes will reduce the access time to download the file.

  • Western States Marriage Record Index.  For more than two decades, the BYU-Idaho (formerly known as Ricks College) Arthur Porter Special Collections area in Rexburg, Idaho has been extracting early marriage records from counties in the western part of the United States. Virtually all of the pre-1900 marriages are included in the index for Arizona , Idaho and Nevada . Many counties for those same states have been extracted into the 1930's and some, much later. A significant number of marriages from selected counties in California , western Colorado , Montana , Oregon , Utah , eastern Washington , and Wyoming are also included.
