Iowa Genealogy Resources

Iowa was part of the Louisiana Territory, and Iowa's development as a territory and state were greatly influenced by the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Its primary resource was its rich farm land.

  • Iowa Marriages 1809-1992 - Name index to marriage records from the state of Iowa - 2,626,423 records as of 6 May, 2010. FamilySearch.org.

  • Iowa State Census 1885 – (FamilySearch) Name index of the Iowa state census taken in 1885. The population schedule names every person in the household.  From the State Historical Society of Iowa, Des Moines, on 95 rolls of FHL microfilm.
     
  • Iowa WPA Graves Survey. More than 650,000 records from 82 Iowa counties done by the Work Projects Administration. Only 17 counties were not included in the WPA survey.
     
  • Iowa Territorial and State Censuses. Territorial censuses include Iowa areas taken by Wisconsin in 1836, and Iowa Territory in 1838. The state of Iowa conducted statewide censuses in 1847, 1849, 1854, 1856, 1859, 1862, 1865, 1867, 1869, 1873, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, and 1925. All have been microfilmed by the State Historical Society or the Genealogical Society of Utah.
     
  • 1925 Iowa State Census. Microfilm of original census records at the State Historical Society of Iowa, Des Moines, Iowa. Filmed by the Society , 1976, 434 rolls, beginning with FHL film #1429191. This census is unique as it is the only known census ever taken in the U.S. to give the father's name and the mother's maiden name.
