Transplanted but not Uprooted: 19th-Century-Immigrants from
Hessen-Darmstadt in Wisconsin. Between 1839 and 1860, some
2,000 people from Rheinhessen, one of the three provinces of
Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, emigrated to Wisconsin where they
clustered in several counties, especially Milwaukee, Washington,
and Sheboygan. Paper presented at the conference "Defining
Tensions: A Fresh Look at Wisconsin Germans", held by Max Kade
Institute for German-American Studies in Madison in October
1998.
